Sarah Hyland got super candid on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday and opened up about her health struggles and battle with depression that almost lead her to commit suicide.
Sarah has had health problems throughout her life (she shared on social media that she was hospitalized in June), and told Ellen that she had six surgeries in the past couple of years, including two kidney transplants, and also dealt with endometriosis and “a whole slew of things.”
After Sarah’s second kidney transplant in 2017, she went into rejection and had to go on dialysis. She was in a lot of pain everyday, which lead to severe depression. Sarah said, “I have an amazing job, an amazing support system, but after 26, 27 years of just always being sick and being in chronic pain every single day, you don’t know when you’re going to have the next good day. It’s really, really hard.”
Sarah also shared that this depression and pain lead to her contemplating suicide, and she said that she was “very, very, very, very close.” Sarah added, “I would write letters in my head to loved ones of why I did it and my reasoning behind it, how it was nobody’s fault and I didn’t want to write it down on paper because I didn’t want anyone to find it because that’s how serious I was.”
Sarah finally said out loud that she was thinking about taking her own life to someone, and that person supported her in going to see a therapist. “Just saying it out loud helped immensely,” Sarah says, “because I kept it to myself for months and months at a time.” And while she knows that everyone is different, for her, “talking to someone and saying it out loud really…puts it into perspective.”
After going to therapy and doing some “soul searching,” Sarah is thankfully now doing much better. You can watch the interview here:
